Popular Tourist Location
Mount Kilimanjaro is located in Tanzania's Kilimanjaro National Park, which is popular for hiking and climbing. Every year, about 30,000 people visit Mount Kilimanjaro, with over 15,000 coming to hike one of the world's tallest mountains. However, due to its receding glaciers and ice fields, it has been the topic of numerous scientific research. In fact, glaciers and ice fields are expected to vanish entirely between 2025 and 2035.
Three Mountains
Mount Kilimanjaro contains three summits that were produced by now-inactive volcanoes. Kibo is the highest at 16,893 feet and the only dormant volcano that could erupt again. Mawenzi is the highest at 16,893 feet, and Shira is the lowest at 13,140 feet. Shira first became active approximately two and a half million years ago, and it features a vast plateau encircled by the ruins of its caldera, which is the edge of a volcanic mountain. The caldera has shrunk over time as a result of the volcanic erosion.
