Cities along Lake Ontario's shores, most notably Rochester in the United States and Toronto in Canada. But a substantial portion of the lake is covered in wetlands, which are home to a variety of plant and animal species. Many of the local species have been extinct as a result of pollution and deforestation. The lake's surrounding wetlands and woodlands are now protected areas.
