The Arrow's remarkable delta wing shape inspired its name. Naturally, many different types of aircraft, both big and little, have delta wings nowadays. However, it was a novel idea at the time. And it performed a unique task. The challenge posed by sound was one that aeroplane engineers had long attempted to overcome. The wing shape turned out to contain the secret. The wave drag produced by delta wings leads to a plethora of intricate vortexes and forces that allow the aircraft to fly faster than the speed of sound.
