The event's three principal organizers, John Roberts, Michael Lang, and Joel Rosenman, projected that the total cost would be $750,000. They ended up spending more than $2.5 million during the festival weekend while only making roughly $1.5 million. Much of the difference was due to a huge audience. Despite the fact that the founders appeared to have incurred a big loss, revenue from the film and a live album more than made up the difference in the budget. What followed is, as they say, history.

Years later, famed former LIFE magazine photographer John Dominis reminisced about Woodstock, hinting that he had a great time throughout the event. Dominis also remarked that, despite his age, he felt he belonged with the children in attendance. “When it comes to older folks, you may believe they are uninviting.
