To alter one's course
Flying above Papua New Guinea, more than a hundred miles from Port Moresby, Captain Eaton spotted what he mistook for a wheat field below. He announced that he had made the decision to make an emergency landing in the fields because he had run out of fuel and could not continue flying. He banked the plane and started a steep dive. He had no idea that a perilous marsh was in their path.
