Targeting Warbirds
A “warbird hunter” is someone who actively seeks out and explores remote areas in search of downed aircraft from past wars. While some do it for the joy of seeing one in the flesh, others strive to extract, export, and sell the specimens to private collectors or museums. The book Pacific Aircraft Wrecks, published a few years after the (re)discovery of the Swamp Ghost, became a guide for early warbird hunters and helped propagate the mythology of that powerful jet by featuring dozens of images of it and the specifics of its location.
