Relationship Moments Of King Charles III and Diana

Charles's terrible jokes at Harry's birth

According to Diana, their newly-found marital bliss lasted exactly until the birth of the baby who would become Prince Harry. “Oh God, it's a boy,” Charles exclaimed upon seeing Harry for the first time. “And he's even got red hair,” he said, presumably to add insult to injury. Though he later claimed to be joking, his remarks shook Diana to her core. For starters, she had just given birth to a healthy child following a nine-hour vaginal birth. Second, her family was full of redheads, so she took the remark quite personally.

Their marriage ‘goes bangs'

So, in 1986, the wheels finally came off the wagon – Charles and Diana both began having affairs. According to his biographer, Charles' long-running infatuation with Camilla, which had just been simmering, was brought to a boil in 1986. On Diana's side was army captain James Hewitt, who had taught her to ride. Their five-year affair continued until 1991, and the redheaded Hewitt has long been suspected of being Harry's biological father – albeit the timeframes don't fit. “It's got all the makings of a Greek tragedy,” Charles remarked in a letter. “I never imagined it would come to this.”
