Charles and Diana alone at the Taj Mahal
The entire globe received word in early 1992 that the Prince and Princess of Wales's marriage might be in trouble. Diana was seen alone on a bench in front of the Taj Mahal, one of the most famous emblems of romance, while on a royal trip to India with Charles. It was a heartbreaking, almost Hollywood-like reminder that romance was scarce in her own marriage to Charles. Even more symbolic, Charles had visited the same monument 12 years ago. He sat alone on the same seat, vowing to return with the woman he loved one day. He never followed through.
