Camilla won the last scene with Charles
As if being scrutinized by the press wasn't terrible enough, Diana herself admitted that another incident “broke (her) heart.” Charles was about to embark on a five-week trip to Australia and New Zealand just a month after proposing. Diana was allegedly in tears as she prepared to wish Charles goodnight when they were abruptly interrupted by a phone call. It was Camilla, and the talk became so heartfelt that Diana felt compelled to leave. It was another instance when she thought she could never match for his affection.
Overhearing Charles's phone conversation
When Charles and Diana got engaged, Diana moved out of her little flat, which she shared with numerous housemates, and into Clarence House, Charles' royal mansion. She eventually left there as well to settle into Buckingham Palace. She remembered it as a place of “dead energy,” and she felt completely alone. That loneliness was exacerbated when she overheard Charles talking to Camilla while he was in the bath. “No matter what happens, I'll always love you,” he allegedly assured Camilla. In another case, she noticed a photograph of Camilla sliding out of his diary. Everything was going wrong.
