The miscarriage while pregnant with William
Charles and Diana welcomed their first child, Prince William, less than a year after their wedding. The birth of a first child and the pregnancy that precedes it are supposed to be some of the most joyous occasions in a couple's life. Charles and Diana defied convention once more. Paul Burrell, Diana's butler, recalled hearing a racket one day while Diana was four months pregnant and finding the Princess halfway down a wooden staircase. She'd apparently hurled herself down the stairs in an attempt to catch Charles' attention. He was certain she did it on purpose… and we discovered this in 1992.
Diana suffered from postpartum depression
Giving birth to William, it soon became clear, did not do much to lift Diana's emotions. She'd suffered from postpartum depression, something many women experience but few dares to discuss. Even the Princess of Wales couldn't bring herself to say anything about it in real-time, revealing it 13 years later. She recalled waking up in the morning and not wanting to get out of bed because she felt misunderstood. She complained bitterly that people portrayed her as unbalanced during this time. On the other hand, her new family liked her much better as a guest than as a daughter-in-law.
