When discussing American prisons, Alcatraz immediately comes to mind. It was strategically placed on an island in the middle of San Francisco Bay, making escape difficult. To reach land, any prisoner who dared to try would have to swim more than a mile against the stream and through freezing water. At least 36 convicts attempted to break out of the prison from its opening in 1934 and its closure in 1963. In June 1962, the most well-known incident occurred. Their eventual outcome was unknown for quite some time because the convicts were never apprehended, and their remains were never discovered. But decades later, new information forced investigators to revisit the case. Which begs the question: what did they discover?
