The Inmates Who Planned the 1962 Breakout from Alcatraz.

Into the Cold Waters for a Swim

Over the course of the next few days, authorities combed San Francisco Bay. There were no bodies discovered, just a few pieces of clothing and some mementos. However, the water temperature at night during that time ranged from 50 to 54 degrees (by contrast, most swimming pools are in the 70s). It wasn't impossible, but swimming was a long shot. On average, adults have about 20 minutes before they start to lose control of basic bodily processes, according to experts. Inmates from Alcatraz wouldn't be able to handle the colder waters of the bay.
