One of the earliest guests was Al Capone.

Al Capone, the notorious mob boss and criminal, was one of the first inmates brought to the newly opened Alcatraz prison in August 1934. In Atlanta, Al Capone received preferential treatment from prison authorities in exchange for bribes. He was serving time for tax evasion. On the prison island, however, this was not the case. He reportedly told his warden, “It looks like Alcatraz has got me licked.”
