The first lighthouse on the Pacific Coast was located on Alcatraz.
On the rugged island of Alcatraz, the first American lighthouse was turned on in 1854. The United States government abandoned the lighthouse in the early 1900s. Because of the army's construction of a cell house, the inmates inside can no longer see the Golden Gate. In 1909, however, it was replaced by a new, larger lighthouse.
