Over a thousand participants swim from Alcatraz to the mainland in San Francisco every year for the “Escape From Alcatraz” triathlon. The competition is not only challenging, but also incredibly competitive. Participants have a 40% chance of being accepted into the triathlon if they enter the lottery system 9 months in advance.
