The Inmates Who Planned the 1962 Breakout from Alcatraz.

To the Anglin Brothers

When Frank Morris arrived in Alcatraz, he thought about getting out. He knew this one would be tougher, so he recruited his brother Anglin and his friend Allen West to help. The Anglin brothers were locals of the Peach State. They were two of Rachael and George Anglin's thirteen children. Their parents worked seasonal farm jobs, so the family frequently relocated from Florida to Michigan and back again. They would make the annual trip to the north in the summer specifically for the cherry-picking season. John and Clarence were best buddies all through John's childhood. The family became expert swimmers throughout their time spent up north on Lake Michigan, to the point that they felt completely at ease swimming in ice-covered waters.
